Why is Mold Dangerous?
Mold infestations can not only have adverse health effects, they can also cause structural compromise and decay to your home. All molds are allergenic. Since no two immune systems are alike, it’s impossible to measure the level of risk mold exposure would have on every individual. What we do know is that newborns only have the antibodies given to them by their mother until their own immune system matures around 2 to 3 months old. This makes them extremely vulnerable to adverse health effects if exposed to mold of any kind, but especially black mold.
Inhaling black mold spores exposes a baby to mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are toxic substances produced by black mold that can cause pulmonary hemorrhage in infants. If a child experiences these kinds of adverse health effects in infancy, they are likely to have chronic long-term effects of the mycotoxins.
What Causes Mold to Grow?
Water. Without water you cannot have mold growth. Behind every mold problem is a water problem.
Water damage makes your home prone to mold. Mold can begin to grow 24-48 hours after a water event. Lack of ventilation, absence of UV light and anything with carbon is a potential food source for mold growth.
If you or your child are experiencing illness during the first 6 months after some sort of water damage incident, get your home inspected.
